A friend of mine put me onto Erika de Casier, less than halfway through first track of Essentials I added the whole tape. Shout out Roddy.
De Casier was born in Portugal, raised in Denmark where she resides today (Copenhagen). She was a part of the Danish collective Regelbau that’s known for their reconceptualization of house music. In 2019, she released Essentials, her debut solo album on her own label Independent Jeep Music.
Within the first 30 seconds of project, no matter where you are, de Casier takes us to a dreamy place with the instrumentals and subtle harmonies of “The Flow”. Followed by “Do My Thing” which makes me want to dance all around my room and get ready for a night out with the homies (pre-covid). Her voice and overall sound reminds me of what you would hear listening to a 90s R&B Hits playlist. She says in an interview with i-D “I remember being mesmerized by Brandy and Monica’s The Boy Is Mine. I love Aaliyah, Destiny’s Child, Craig David, Usher, Janet Jackson, Toni Braxton, and so on. I’m also into house, garage, techno… I’m an open listener and I am influenced by many different genres.” This is makes a lot of sense when you listen to her work.
I am excited to see what the future holds for Erika de Casier and can’t wait to hear more from her. Her most recent single is called “No Butterflies, No Nothing”, her first release under the independent label 4AD.
My top 3 tracks are Do My Thing, Intimate, and Little bit or Space - I can't decide on this one..
